As we are well into the coldest part of winter, every truck owner should by now have checked, and become aware of the current condition of, their truck’s batteries. But do most drivers actually do this? It is good to remember that even if a truck still starts in the cold, it doesn’t mean that the cranking and charging systems are operating at peak performance. While the main purpose of the batteries is to start the truck, they are also “ground zero” for the truck’s entire electrical system.

Keeping all connections to the batteries clean not only ensures the truck will start, but it also provides the truck with the good, clean power it needs to efficiently operate all systems. As trucks continue to become more complex, the demand on a truck’s electrical system is growing exponentially. We are seeing an ever-increasing hotel load, higher than ever temps under the aerodynamics, and APUs which can often hide battery issues from view.

Kenworth knows how important regular battery care is. The new T680 Next Gen was designed with a new, convenient flip-up driver’s step that allows the battery connection to be quickly and easily accessed during pre-trip inspections.

Battery maintenance may be one of the best ways to reduce unwanted down time. Many engine and transmission issues are easily avoided with just a little extra time spent having regularly scheduled PM services done. Remembering to take the time to clean connections and load test the batteries at every PM could save you time and money later.

A battery replacement schedule of 12-18 months is a good rule-of-thumb to keep everything running smoothly.
