Understanding Engine Auto Start/Stop and KIMS Options

Engine Auto Start/Stop and Kenworth Idle Management System (KIMS) are two separate systems, but they can be paired together. It is important to understand the functionality included with each system to ensure the vehicle operates as intended.

 Engine Auto Start/Stop will automatically start or stop the engine based on the battery state of charge. Oil or fuel temperatures can be monitored based on the selected sales code. This system is designed to protect equipment in severe weather.

KIMS is an idle reduction option. It is a battery-powered sleeper heating and cooling system designed to reduce idle time and conserve fuel. KIMS is primarily a driver comfort device and should be paired with Engine Auto Start/ Stop so that the KIMS batteries can be recharged when needed. KIMS includes HVAC equipment, a thermostat, and 4 auxiliary batteries – pictured below.
